Its common name in most languages refers to its large (&#8220;bug&#8221;) eyes.\u00a0They prefer rocky bottoms and is a coastal fish that can live in variable environments.\u00a0\u00a0it can generally be found at a depth of 100\u00a0m (330\u00a0ft). It is widespread in the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Individuals can reach 36\u00a0cm (14\u00a0in), but average 20\u00a0cm (7.9\u00a0in). It consumes seaweed, crustaceans, and some plankton, in schools that rise to the surface at night.\u00a0Sex determination\u00a0in the bogue is unclear.
