Prideaux's hermit crab (Pagurus prideaux) is a small hermit crab species from the family Paguridae, distributed in the northeastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Adriatic Sea. It most commonly inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms, usually at greater depths. Its body is light in color, and the soft posterior part of the body is protected by a gastropod shell, on which the sea anemone Adamsia palliata is almost always present. This well-known symbiosis provides the crab with protection from predators, while the anemone benefits from mobility and improved access to food. It feeds on small invertebrates and organic remains and plays an important role in nutrient cycling in marine ecosystems.
