The bogue (Lat. Boops boops). Its common name in most languages refers to its large (“bug”) eyes. They prefer rocky bottoms and is a coastal fish that can live in variable environments. it can generally be found at a depth of 100 m (330 ft). It is widespread in the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Individuals can reach 36 cm (14 in), but average 20 cm (7.9 in). It consumes seaweed, crustaceans, and some plankton, in schools that rise to the surface at night. Sex determination in the bogue is unclear. Bogue is not a particularly popular fish in the kitchen, mainly because its meat tends to take on an unpleasant smell within a few days.
