The Madeira scorpionfish (Scorpaena maderensis) is a bottom-dwelling marine fish from the family Scorpaenidae, distributed in the eastern Atlantic and the western Mediterranean Sea, including the Adriatic, where it can be found on rocky and algae-covered bottoms at depths ranging from 0 to 40 meters. Its body is stout, with a large head covered in skin appendages. It can be distinguished from similar species in the Adriatic by the characteristic white appendages on its chin. Coloration varies from brown to red. The body bears numerous spines, with those on the dorsal fins being venomous. It grows up to 15 cm in length and can live for up to 5 years. It feeds on small fish and crustaceans, using camouflage to ambush its prey.
