Mediterranean moray (Lat. Muraena helena). Leaves above rocky coast with caves and crevices to depth of 5-50 m. Grows to 130 cm (8 kg), common 60-100 cm. The body, serpentiform and without scales, covered by resistant and slimy skin due to the mucus secreted, is cylindrical in the first half and then more and more laterally compressed towards the tail. Their eyesight is very poor, but it is of no need, seen the nocturnal habits. During the day, the moray keeps hiding in its den and hunts only in the darkness. It is a really bad swimmer. Contrary to the beliefs, it is not aggressive but is territorial, and when disturbed it does not hesitate to bite. Pain and tears apart, the wounds may aver dangerous, due to the presence in the saliva of haemolytic and neurotoxic substances and the inevitable infections due to the presence of pathogenic agents in the alimentary residues decomposing between the teeth. Feeds with fish and crabs. Catches by fish-traps, spear gun and long-lining.
