Pink goosebump sponge (Lat. Dysidea avara). It is sessile, tropical, massive a violet-colored, encrusting and heavily conulated dictyoceratid sponge. It is a Mediterranean species, similar to the common Dysidea fragilis, but with a coarser surface, with higher conules, placed further apart. Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge. Нis species produces the sesquiterpene hydroquinone avarol (as the main secondary metabolite) and its quinone form avarone, as well as some other minor derivatives. Avarol has showed numerous bioactivities such as antitumour, antileukemic and antipsoriasiatic.
