The shame-faced crab (Callappa granulata) inhabits the Mediterranean Sea, including the Adriatic Sea, as well as the eastern Atlantic Ocean. It lives on sandy and muddy seabeds, where it often buries itself during the day, leaving only its eyes visible. It is easily recognized by its broad, rounded carapace and large flattened claws, which it uses to crush the shells of snails and bivalves, its main food source. Its common name comes from its habit of holding its claws in front of its body, giving the appearance of hiding its face. Size: up to 12 cm carapace width.
