Parablennius gattorugine is the largest Adriatic blenny, easily recognized by the pronounced skin appendages (“whiskers”) above the eyes and its robust head. The body is elongated and slightly flattened, with a continuous dorsal fin. Colouration varies from brown to olive green, often with darker spots and bands that provide excellent camouflage among rocks. In the wild it can grow up to 30 cm, but in aquarium conditions it usually remains smaller (20–25 cm), depending on space and diet. It inhabits shallow waters, rocky shores, crevices and small caves, usually from a few metres depth down to about 20–30 m. It is territorial and closely associated with shelter. Highly territorial, especially towards other blennies and similarly shaped fish. Spends most of its time resting on the substrate or hidden in holes. More active during the day. Its diet consists of pieces of fish and molluscs, shrimps, and mysids.
