Triton’s trumpet (genus Charonia) is a group of large marine snails with elongated spindle-shaped shells, a large opening, and an oval operculum. The shells can exceed 50 cm in length, and the animal can weigh up to 1 kg, making it—along with the barrel snail—one of the largest gastropods in the Adriatic Sea. The genus name is linked to the Greek sea god Triton, son of Poseidon, who was often depicted blowing a shell resembling those of this genus. These snails feed on sea stars, and their overharvesting can disrupt marine ecosystems. In the Pacific Ocean, a decline in Triton snails has contributed to outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish, which devastate coral reefs. Overcollection has made them rare in places like Guam and the Philippines. In the Adriatic, they are legally protected, and removing them from the sea is punishable by law.
